Maddie and Caleb’s story begins as high school sweethearts turned long distance relationship turned engagement…which turned into the most epic wedding day! Maddie had planned an amazing wedding day at an outdoor venue and had every detail carefully created. She hand dyed fabric for her tables, stuffed envelopes, and even learned photoshop. It was a family project with her parents building photo backdrops, copper archways, and donut walls, while Caleb’s mom baked her butt off. This was their perfect day, their curated detailed beautifully planned day. But mother nature had a different plan.
Despite the 90% chance of storms all day, we managed to escape the rain for most of the morning. It wasn’t until the guests were arriving and the ceremony was about to start that the power went out, and thunder and lighting made an appearance. With heavy rains, all of the 300 guests opened umbrellas and rushed to huddle together under tents and the reception pavilion.
Realizing the storm wasn’t stopping the wedding guests came together and started flipping the entire reception space into a wedding ceremony. With hail coming down, friends and family began rearranging tables, moving table settings, and passing chairs over the crowd. They used the photo wall as the ceremony backdrop. They grabbed palm leaves and candles and created an aisle. This group of people were determined to make sure a wedding would take place! It was about this time that I heard my name being called through the crowd. Someone yelled, “Haley and Alex, they need you in the woods with the wedding party now!”
The bride and groom were taking cover in a small tent in the woods, and had no idea what was taking place at the bottom of the hill. All they knew was that they didn’t want to wait any longer to get married and say “I do.” So, right there under the trees, with their best friends, they had the most intimate and exciting wedding ceremony. No one care about the rain, only smiles and happy tears…lots of happy tears.
Maddie and Caleb lead the wedding party down the hill and under the pavilion where their guests were waiting for a wedding. They announced what had just occured with the vows in the woods, and it was met with loud applause and cheers from the crowd! But these people came for a wedding, so we gave them one! Maddie and Caleb got the ceremony they planned…it just looked a little different than they expected. Everyone was soaked, but they ate burritos and danced all night, and made it one heck of a party!
This was one for the books. The kind of story you tell your kids one day and they will never believe it went down the way it did. The kind of wedding that you turn to each other the next day and say “what just happened!?” In the end, Maddie and Caleb are married. God decided they would start their marriage by letting go, rolling with the punches, and finding joy in the things that really matter.
